About Freedom Trail
The Freedom Trail first passes the Robert
Gould Shaw and 54th Regiment Memorial on Beacon Street. It honors the
first black regiment of the Union Army in the American Civil War. The Freedom
Trail then passes the Massachusetts State House, a magnificent building
with a gilded dome constructed at the end of the 18th century. The path next
passes the 1809 Park Street Church where the song 'America' was first
sung publicly on July 4, 1831.
Next the Freedom Trail leads you to the Old Granary Burial Ground where
famous patriots like Paul Revere, John Hancock and Samuel Adams are buried.
The next stop, King's Chapel is New England's oldest Anglican Church.
The Old South Meeting House was the starting point for the Boston Tea
Party. The next stop on the trail is the Old State House, which was the
seat of the British government. It now serves as a museum.
The trail then passes the site of the Boston Massacre and the 1742
Faneuil Hall, which was used as a meeting place and market place. The path
next passes Paul Revere's House, the oldest structure in Boston. It was
built in 1680 and purchased by Paul Revere in 1770. Next on the trail is the
Old North Church, also known as the Christ Church. It was here that
Robert Newman hung the lanterns signaling the approach of the British troops
in the War for Independence.
Copp's Hill Burial ground is the resting place for many of the colonial
Bostonians. The final stop of the trail, the Bunker Hill Monument,
commemorates the first major battle of the revolution.
