We flew from Los Angeles, CA to Denver, CO and then on to the Greater Cincinnati, OH Airport in Covington, KY. We rented a car at the airport, drove around Covington, KY and then into Cincinnati. After Cincinnati we drove I-71 to Columbus, OH. Then we drove to Cleveland, OH (I lived in Cleveland from late 1963 to late 1969). From Cleveland we drove I-90 to Erie, PA and then I-90 to Buffalo, NY and Niagara Fall, Canada. From Niagara Fall we drove to Rochester, NY using I-90 and I-390 and then to Syracuse, NY on I-90. From Rochester we drove I-90 through Utica, NY and Schenectady, NY A little East of Schenectady we turned onto NY State Route 7 and went to the Vermont State Border. From there we took Vermont State Route 9 to Bennington, VT. (At Bennington, VT we were going to stay at an historic hotel built in the late 1700s but the only room they had was in the attic with shared bathroom. I told them no thanks I didn’t feel like roughing it right then). From there we drove State Route 9 to Brattleboro, VT. Then we went north on I-91 about 4 miles then turned east on State Route 9 to Keene, NH. From Keene we took route 9, US 202, I-89 and I-93 to Concord, NH. From Concord we took I-95 north to the White Mountains National Forest. On I-93 about 10 north of North Woodstock, NH we sat the Old Man of the Mountain. Just north of there we turned on US 3. Close to Twin Mountain, NH we turned on US 302 and drove through the White Mountain National Forest to State Route 16 and turned north through the White Mountains to US 2 (we drove approximately 100 miles in the White Mountain National Forest) and turned east to Bethel, Maine. Then we took State Route 6 south to I-495 to Portland, Maine. From Portland we drove south on I-95 to Portsmouth, NH. From Portsmouth we drove south on I-95 to Boston, Massachusetts. We drove the Freedom Trail from Boston to Lexington, MA and then to Concord, MA and then back to Boston. From Boston we went south on I-93 to Braintree, Massachusetts. From Braintree we took State Route 3 to Plymouth, Massachusetts (I was a little disappointed in Plymouth Rock, where the Pilgrims were supposed to have landed. It wasn’t very large). From Plymouth we took State Route 3 to US 6 and went out on Cape Cod. On Cape Cod we visited Hyannis, Hyannis Port, Provincetown, Woods Hole and some other places on Cape Cod. From Provincetown we went west to I-195 and then to New Bedford, MA. From New Bedford we took I-195 to Fall River, MA. From Fall River on I-195 we went we went to Providence, Rhode Island. From Providence we took I-95 south to New London, Connecticut. From New London we took I-95 to New Haven, CT. From New Haven we took I-95 to Bridgeport, CT. From Bridgeport we took I-95 to Newark, New Jersey. From Newark we went east to New York, New York (Manhattan Island). We crossed the George Washington Bridge into New York City. While in New York City we drove around and visited Broadway, Empire State Building, Greenwich Village (pronounced Grenich) and Battery Park. We passed by the Twin Towers and I didn’t even notice them, suppose I wasn’t looking for tall buildings. Statue of Liberty was closed for renovation at that time but we got to see it from Battery Park. When we left New York City we crossed the Brooklyn Bridge and then the Verrazano Narrows Bridge to Staten Island. We drove across Staten Island and crossed the bridge to Perth Amboy, New Jersey. From Perth Amboy we went west about 5 miles to I-95. (In this area they toll you to death on highways and bridges; even I-95 is a toll road. It seems like every few minutes you have your hand in you pocket getting money to pay a toll). We went south on I-95 to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. From Philadelphia we went I-95 to Wilmington, Delaware. From Wilmington we went I-95 to Baltimore, Maryland. From Baltimore we went to Washington D.C. and Clinton, Maryland to visit my wife’s uncle who lived in Clinton. Her uncle was 74 years old, was a 30 year retiree from the Air Force, worked for the CIA and rode a motorcycle 26 miles one way to work. We went to Andrews Air Force Base and toured the CIA building with her uncle. There were a lot of areas in the building that were restricted. We also saw Air Force Two at Andrews, Air Force One was gone at that time. We also toured Washington D.C. and Arlington, Virginia. When we left the Washington D.C. area we drove west on I-66 to I-81 and went south. We drove on I-81 to Staunton, Virginia and then turned west on US 250 to West Virginia State Route 28/92, close to Durbin. We went south on 28/92 to an unpaved road (Laurel Run Road) that goes to Clover Lick, WV. We went from Clover Lick, on Back Mountain Road, to Poage Lane to visit my family. When we left Poage Lane we drove to the Greater Cincinnati Airport, this is where we started the drive from, and got the airplane back to Denver/Los Angeles.
We drove over 3500 miles. Total miles we traveled including airplane and vehicle were over 6500 miles.
When we completed this tour through the New England States I had been in all 50 of these United States.
If I had the time and a large motor home I would travel all of Canada and Mexico.
If I had a
large motor home I would love to travel the Trans-Canada Highway (In some places
known as Queen Elizabeth Way) from Nova Scotia, Canada on the Atlantic Coast to
Victoria, British Columbia on Vancouver Island on the Pacific Coast. The
distance is about 4800 miles.
I have been to both Canada and Mexico
but not extensively.
During this vacation we were in the following states:
Started from California
Colorado
Kentucky
Ohio
Pennsylvania
New York
Vermont
New Hampshire
Maine
Massachusetts
Rhode Island
